John Bierly, MD
Dr. John Bierly is a board-certified ophthalmologist with subspecialty expertise in diseases of the cornea and anterior segment. He has been a leader in the use of modern small-incision cataract techniques and was the first surgeon in East Tennessee to perform laser-assisted cataract surgery. With more than 50,000 cataract procedures performed, Dr. Bierly has extensive experience using specialty intraocular lenses designed to address astigmatism and presbyopia. His clinical focus reflects the importance of matching modern surgical technology with careful patient selection and individualized treatment planning. His corneal care includes evaluation of disorders that affect the clarity, shape, and surface of the cornea and can significantly influence visual quality. Treatment planning is individualized according to the underlying corneal condition, severity of disease, visual needs, and other factors affecting ocular health. He combines medical management with advanced surgical options when necessary to address disease of the cornea and ocular surface. Because corneal conditions can affect both comfort and vision, his care emphasizes accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and long-term monitoring when needed.
