Randall Funderburk, MD
Dr. Randall Funderburk has extensive experience treating diseases of the retina and vitreous, including diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration. Clinical research has been an important part of his career. Dr. Funderburk served as Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at Erlanger Medical Center from 1988 to 1989 and later became an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga in 2004. In 2013, he established The Retina Center, a facility designed specifically for the care of patients with retinal disease. He works with patients whose retinal conditions may require observation, office-based treatment, surgery, or a combination of approaches over time. This specialty requires close attention to changes in the macula, retina, and vitreous so treatment can be adapted as a patient’s condition evolves. His approach is centered on preserving useful vision while helping patients understand the diagnosis, available treatment options, and recommended follow-up. Retinal disease often requires long-term management, and he focuses on coordinating treatment and surveillance based on each patient’s individual findings.
