Rod W. Nowakowski, OD, PhD

Dr. Rod Nowakowski is a highly specialized optometrist and researcher whose work centers on ophthalmic genetics and advanced diagnostic testing. He helps evaluate inherited and other complex eye disorders, supporting accurate diagnosis, individualized care planning, and long-term management. Dr. Nowakowski earned both his Doctor of Optometry and Ph.D. in Medical Genetics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where his career has also included clinical care, research, and academic leadership. His undergraduate education includes degrees in mathematics from the University of Miami and physiological optics from UAB. He is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association, American Society of Human Genetics, American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision, and American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The consultative model supports continuity of care by coordinating diagnosis, treatment recommendations, perioperative management, and follow-up with the patient’s broader eye care team.
